List of Shame

As of 8:30 AM on Thursday, December 18, 2008, only 11 out of 68 people have all 5 requirements taken care of. Tsk, tsk. To the 11 of you NOT on the lists below, you are my shining stars. I dedicate my vacation to Jamaica to you.

List of Shame:

If you are on the list, it means you do NOT have the requirement taken care of. Being on the list is bad.

Reminder

You must turn all forms in before break! (Eligibility and fee to office; info, contract, and volunteer to me [two yellows and a blue])

There are A LOT of people with missing forms. Get this taken care of, so I can focus on more exciting and fun things than hounding you for forms!

If you ever have questions/concerns about anything speech related, make sure you come talk to me at school. I'm happy to help.

Here we go!

And we're off to a great start! Thank you SO much to all who attended the meeting last night (or to those who came in yesterday to say they couldn't make it, but picked up all the materials). A few things:

1. Go here (linked from my teacher web page) to view an online version of the handbook (if you were to lose your paper copy or something :-)).

2. Go here (MN State High School League speech page) to read ALL THE RULES OF SPEECH AND YOUR CATEGORY SPECIFICALLY. After last year's unfortunate disqualification, there will be no more rule infractions on my watch. You are responsible for reading and know what is and is not allowed. See me or your coach with questions.

3. I have the date of the state tournament wrong in the handbook. It is April 17-18 NOT 24-45. I believe we're on Friday this year, but we'll know for sure closer to that time. State is NOT in the cities this year, so if we qualify, we will need to make a trip out of it. (It is at Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter.)

4. Remember to turn in your form and fee to Mrs. Rogness in the activities office by BREAK!

5. Turn in your info sheet, contract, and parent volunteer form to ME in A109 ASAP!

6. Leave a comment on this page as proof you have read this. (Click on comments.)

Have a super wonderful weekend. Next week we begin! Looking forward to it :-).

Recruitment Contest

Now that auditions are over (and we have 48 new speechers!!!), I can be proud of all of you for doing your part to recruit. The following people were given credit for recruiting on the forms: Abbie, Adam, Ashley, Christian, Dylan, Jeff, Joe, Kelly, Lisa, Logan, Meron, Michelle, Ryan, and Sarah. Good job, guys! The winner, however, is the person who was listed most often on forms. We had a tie for first....thanks SO much to Lisa Sweere and Dylan Slinger! They will each receive a special gift from me at the all-team meeting on December 4th. 5:00 PM. Lecture Hall. BE THERE!!!!

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

MEETING

First all-team meeting: Thursday, Dec. 4th in the lecture hall. BRING YOUR PARENTS. 5 PM.

See me if you can't make it (but you better have a good reason).

Meeting!

The interest meeting is Thursday, Nov. 13th at 3:00. I'd like as many of you to come as possible, in addition to new recruits. Be prepared to tell all the GREAT things about speech (not the getting up at 5 AM on a Saturday part :-)).

Prize for the first one to tell me about the content of this post! (you can not win twice, by the way :-)).

Auditions

One month (give or take a few days) until speech auditions! Recruit your friends today! A prize for the person who recruits the most!

Also, a prize to the first person to come in and tell me they read this post :-).

Happy MEA break, folks!

Friday, September 26, 2008

Still checking?

I have another small prize for the first person to come in and tell me about this post. Only THREE came in for the last one...yikes! Two months until speech starts, get in the habit!

Something to plan on: MSU is hosting a Winter Warm-up Workshop the week before our first tournament (Sat. Jan. 24th). They will workshop all events all day (9-5). This wouldn't be a speech team requirement (no coaches/judges, no bus), but I will give you lettering points if you attend. I think it will be GREAT to get the season going. The cost is $20 per student which includes lunch. Mankato is only 80 miles and carpooling will be great. I can fit three in my car...

More to come!!!

Welcome back to school!

Enjoy your last weekend of summer. We don't have anything going on for awhile (we're skipping the Fall Festival again this year), but I miss you, so stop in to see me! We have a great new coach, and I'm really excited about him. His name is Mr. Lawrence and he's teaching Tech Writing, Creative Writing, and Eng 10, so you might have him.

Mostly, I'm checking in to see who checks the blog in the off-season. I have a prize for the FIRST person to come see me next week and mentions this post. After the prize-winner, you can have candy, so still stop by :-).

Thanks

Thank you all SO much for an excellent season. Also, the gift certificate and individual cards and trinkets from people were touching. Some of the other coaches and I are going to use our gift certificates together and have dinner next week. We'll probably gush about how great you all are! So, thanks.

We will miss Mike and Kayla A LOT. I hope they know how much we value them. Juniors, you did an excellent job with the tribute. Very touching. Next year's juniors have a lot to live up to.

Speaking of next year, I'm very excited to have Sarah and Kelly leading the team. It was a pretty close contest; all juniors received votes. Which isn't surprising because the juniors this year are super.

Don't forget to see me about speech camp!!!

Good luck in your final weeks of school. Stay tuned to the website for summer communication (sporadic, I'm sure, but you never know...).

Cheers!--Your favorite coach (you know it's true) Mrs. Heinis

Lettering Sheet

Please turn in your lettering sheet to Mrs. Heinis in A109 by next Tuesday (April 29th). If you lost your sheet, write down the tournaments you attended, the days and reasons you missed practice, and what you did to help with the tournament on a piece of paper and turn that in.

Team Practice

Some of your very eager teammates would like to hold an all-team practice on Monday at 3. I think you should make every effort to be there. Discussion will meet as scheduled; Suzanne, Angie, and Joy will all be here. Input from all. And probably a grand ol' time. See you then!

Sections

In case you didn't get the memo from your first hour teacher, here's the sections info again:

Here is all the news that’s fit to print on the situation:

1. You will be dismissed at 12:35 (the end of 4th hour).
2. You may wear your nice clothes to school if you want, but if you would rather wait and change, you will only have 5 minutes to change, as we are leaving at 12:40. If you want, you can leave clothes in my room at the beginning of the day.
3. Registration for the tournament starts at 2:45. Then why are we leaving so early? Lunch! We will be stopping for a sit-down lunch somewhere (probably Applebee’s like last year). So you should bring $$$$.
4. The tournament is three rounds and a final, just like others, but as it doesn’t start until 3, awards aren’t until past 9. So, we will not be home until approximately 10:30 P.M. This is late. You have school on Wednesday. You MUST be in school on Wednesday. No excuses.
5. There are 15 schools in our section, and each school can only bring three in each category. So, at a maximum, there will be 45 people in each event, making this a relatively small tournament. The top three speakers in each category will advance to the state tournament on Saturday, April 19th. (more news to come about that, should the need arise… knock on wood…)
6. There will most likely be concessions for dinner, but you may want to bring something just in case.
7. If parents come to watch you (which I encourage), you may go home with them only with my personal (face-to-face) recognition of that, and you may only leave after awards. You may not leave early. You will have teammates in finals receiving awards. Being there to support them shows team solidarity. We need to have that. You compete individually, but you are a part of a team.
8. Finally, and VERY important, you must have a clean copy of your current script with you. It will be turned in. Anyone without a script will not be able to compete. This includes Creative, Duo, Drama, Humor, Poetry, Prose, Oratory, Great Speeches, and Info. Your script should include your name, grade, and school on the heading. You can give this to me any time before sections and I will keep it safe for you J.
9. I’ll let you know if I think of anything else. Stop by and see me in A109 if you have any questions.
-Your ever-loving coach, Mrs. H.

Captains 2009

It's almost time to vote for captains for next year. We will vote on the bus on the way to sections, so if you're not coming to sections and you want to vote, stop by my room. Below are the candidates (juniors) for captain. They are ALL awesome, but consider the following: commitment, leadership, work ethic, and general merriment. Although doing well (making finals, etc.) is often noted, it is not a criteria you should use for captains. Being a good speaker doesn't necessarily make you a good leader. Captains have the following responsibilities: t-shirts, tournament, banquet, and general role-model-ship. If you do NOT want to be a captain, let me know, and I won't put you on the ballot. Let me know if I forgot anyone, or put someone who isn't a junior on the list.

Kelly Cole
Michelle Heintze
Joe Julik
Christian Keil
Ryan Longley
Sarah Rosenthal
Julie Schmidt
Mikaela Schwartz
Emily Schwegman
Joe Shim

Good luck to all!!!!
