Thank you!

What a great season we've had! We have broken several of our records, even if it is a short history, it's still impressive. I don't know who all still checks this, but this post is an important one, so I hope a lot. I considered having a meeting to discuss this, but I know everyone is really busy right now.

I am so proud of all the hard work you've done this season and past seasons. Every week you amaze me with your talent and attitude. I am happy to refer to each of you as "my kids".

That being said, I am now moving on. In 7 1/2 months, I'll be having my own kid. Yup. I'm pregnant. And due in January. Thus, I have resigned as your Head Speech Coach. This was a difficult decision, but I know I won't be able to be a good coach and a good mom at the same time. Many coaches are capable of having children and coming right back in a few months or the next season, and I respect them. But I know I will not be able to be one of them.

To answer your question, no, I don't know who will replace me. There will be an interview process soon, I imagine. But, you have amazing captains and assistant coaches. You might not even notice I'm gone.

You've all touched my life in wonderful ways. I'm excited for the great things in your futures. You are a very talented bunch and I know we'll all be hearing great things from the Lakeville South Speech Team!!!!

Sections Info

Posted only one day prior, because you were supposed to be a group practice to find all of this out. Alas, if you skipped, you still need the info.

1. Either come to school dressed up or change BEFORE we leave.
2. You will be dismissed at 12:00. This is part way through 4th hour. Don't eat lunch (unless you reeeeaaaalllly want to).
3. We're going to lunch at Applebee's, so bring $$$.
4. Bring $$ for dinner also (or pack a dinner; or bring your leftovers from Applebee's)a
5. We will be home past 11 most likely, but...
6. You MUST be in school on Friday morning. You'll live, I promise.

Interp Opportunity

I received the following email today. Looks like it could be pretty fun!

"My name is Laura Johnson and I am a speech coach at LNHS. I was emailing you in regards to a summer performing program I am working with. I was hoping you could let your wonderful speech students know about the audition on MAY 1st.

The Program is called The Peter Pan Project. The Garage youth center in Burnsville is sponsoring it and the performances will be taking place outside in their park this summer.

We will be casting 15 students ages 13-18. Using the classic story of Peter Pan students will work to create an original version of the fairytale.

I believe this will be a wonderful opportunity for speech students who love performing and creating their own work.

Please visit our website, peterpanproject.com

Thank you for your time,
Laura Johnson"

Sections Practice

The week of sections, we will have group practices on Monday (the 12th), Tuesday (the 13th), and Wednesday (the 14th). You MUST come to at least one of these practices, as information about sections will be shared. If you want extra practice, feel free to come to more than one day. All practice sessions are from 3-5. Your other coaches may ask you to also practice with them that week, which is fine. Discussion: you need to come at least for the information; after that, if you HAVEN'T had a practice discussion or research time that week, I can set you up.

NEW Section List

Only a few changes, but PLEASE review it to make sure it's accurate. If you drop from sections (after Thursday, April 8th), the drop fee is $40, as the sections registration is twice the cost.

Speech Contest

Gustavus Adolphus College is having an oratory contest for high school students at its Annual Peace Conference on Wednesday, April 28th. The question is "How would you create, nurture, and preserve peace in your community?" There is a 1,500 word limit. Registration is due April 15. Go to www.gustavus.edu/mayday and click on Oratory Contest Registration on the left. Oh, and the first prize is $750!

Three Things:

1. The banquet is Tuesday, May 4th at 5 PM. Put it on your calendar.
2. If you were NOT at the St Cloud tournament, please come to Heinis' room to vote for next year's captains.
3. I will be posting a NEW sections roster this week. Stay tuned. (Turns out there are more people in the musical than I originally thought, so I have to talk to Casperson again about who can and cannot miss.)

Captains 2011

We will be voting for next year's captains on the bus to St. Cloud. If you are NOT coming to St. Cloud, but would still like to cast a vote, please stop in my room after spring break. There are 18 of you not going to St. Cloud, so that is a significant number.

The juniors wishing to be captain will write a paragraph explaining why they would be a good captain. This will help you make your decision. We will have three captains next year.

See me with questions.

St Cloud Registration

Is due THIS FRIDAY. If you aren't coming and still need to let me know, please do so ASAP. After Friday, you'll have to pay the $20.

Also, if you are interested in doing either of their "extra" categories described below, let me know before Friday. They look both challenging and fun!

Creative DUO and Impromptu

Rationale: 1. Allows students to showcase their talent in a different venue, if they have already competed in post season tournaments.

2. Allows your students the opportunity to double enter at a tournament if they have never done so.

3. Presents Something FUN!!!! …. And NEW!!!!

Format: Each category will have three rounds and a final. The Creative Duo finalists will showcase their pieces in front of the entire audience prior to awards. A panel of three judges will judge the final round. Impromptu finals will occur during the regular final rounds.

Awards: Silver plates will be awarded for each event. These events will be included in Team Award points.

Rules for 1. Each speech can be up to 7 minutes in length.
CREATIVE DUO 2. The speech can be humorous or serious in nature.
3. Same MSHSL rules for Creative apply in regards to percentage of quoted material.
4. Duo partners cannot make eye contact or physically touch.
5. Speech must have an introduction.
6. One chair or stool can be used..
7. Singing is allowed.
8. Performers are allowed free movement.

Rules for 1. Each round will focus on a certain category.
IMPROMPTU Round 1: Quotations/Proverbs
Round 2: Infomercials
Round 3: Once upon a time……
Finals: Imaginary Scenarios

2. In the prelim rounds, students will draw right outside the speaking room, and then have a total of seven minutes of prep time and speaking time. They should try for 2 to 3 minutes of prep time and 3 to 4 minutes of speaking time. The final round will allow a half hour prep time with a seven minute speaking limit. Each draw will consist of three possibilities. Contestants will choose one and put the other two back. Just like MSHSL draw categories, for example, the student will draw three possible quotations and will decide which one he or she will perform and will put the other two back in the envelope.

ROUND DETAILS

Round 1: Quotations: These will be a mixture of serious and not-so-serious quotations and proverbs. The students will draw three, and decide which one he or she will use. They cannot have a note card, but they can use the slip of paper with the quotation/proverb on it.
Example: “I don’t think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday.”
–Abraham Lincoln

Round 2: Infomercial: The students will draw an object out of a box, and they will try to “sell” the item as if it is on an infomercial….. “Billy Mays here with the fantastic……”

Round 3: “Once upon a time…”: They will have a phrase which will read… “Once upon a time there was a horse…” Or “Once upon a time I landed on the moon….” Or “Once upon a time I got in trouble for…”

Final Round: Imaginative Scenarios: Speakers will draw from three envelopes. The topics consist of a strange place, object, and catchphrase. Using these three things, they construct a story. An example of these things would be inside 1)Mount Rushmore, 2) a magic cowboy hat, and 3) “I may not be the best-looking guy in here, but I'm the only one that's talking to you." This is a fun, challenge because it requires creativity.

Check your schedules

Please remember to check your schedules and let me know ASAP if you are not coming to a tournament. Remember, March 27 (St Cloud tournament) is the first day of spring break. Right now, 42 people are scheduled to come on the 27th, but something tells me more than that are going somewhere for spring break...

North Results

Great job at the North tournament this weekend! We took 5th place as a team (our first trophy!). For those of you confused, however, we did not beat North. They did have more points than us (by a lot :-)), but it is poor etiquette to give yourself an award, so a tournament host will never take a trophy.

Logan Halliday- Semifinalist, Storytelling
McCall Halliday- Semifinalist, Creative

Friday, March 05, 2010

CHECK YOUR SCHEDULES!!!

Please, please, please, double check your schedules. I had 5 people drop from the North tournament this week AFTER registration. Whereas the drop fee is easily paid for many, it is still a big, big pain in the butt. Mostly, I have hired a judge that we might not need. I am having trouble finding judges for March tournaments, so if you know you won't be at the March 13th, 20th, or 27th tournaments, let me know NOW. One entry DOES make a difference to judge hiring.

Thursday, March 04, 2010

NFLs

Remember, if you want to come to NFLs (and you received a letter explaining your eligibility and the tournament), then you must return your contract by TOMORROW, March 5th (Friday). I need to register tomorrow.

Monday, March 01, 2010

North Information

Hooray! Another tournament we don't need a bus for :-). Our tournament this weekend is at North. Round One starts at 8:30 (draws at 8:00), so you need to meet me in the North cafeteria at 7:20 to check in and get your info. Like the last 2 tournaments, they are site-scheduling. So, if you're late, I'll drop you from the tournament and you'll have to pay the $20 AND stay and watch. BE ON TIME!

This tournament is different than others. Instead of honors finals and varsity finals, they do semi-finals and finals. Three prelims as regular, then top 12 go into semis and top 6 advance to finals. This means there are 5 rounds instead of 4. This means awards START at 5, instead of end at 5. BUT, there's no bus ride, so it all evens out to being done by 6ish. Speaking of being done, you NEED to have a ride arranged. Last week, awards were over at 5, but I didn't get to leave until 5:45 while waiting for parents to come get you. Call BEFORE awards to give your ride an estimated time. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL AWARDS ARE OVER TO CALL. If it runs 10 minutes behind, and your ride has to wait, it's not the end of the world.

Bloomington AND Eastview Information

(Because I will be gone until Thursday, the 25th, I am posting info for both tournaments. DON'T GET THEM CONFUSED!!!)

Bloomington (Sat. Feb. 20):
Because this is north of the river, there is a return bus. YOU MAY NOT LEAVE EARLY FOR SADIES!!!!!!!! The bus will leave at 7:10, so be here at 7:05. Coaches are Emily and Andy. Varsity and All extemp get on Bus 1 (with Andy); Novice and all discussion get on Bus 2 (with Emily). They are going different places, so this is very important!!!

Roster-- It is becoming easier to list those that are NOT coming. So, if your name is not on this list, you are registered to attend. NOT ATTENDING: Abbie Barrett, Charlie Carson, Hannah Heintze, Megan Johnston, Joan Keller, and Jeff Steinkamp.

VERY IMPORTANT: I WILL BE IN MEXICO. CALLING ME WOULD BE POINTLESS. IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO MAKE IT ON SATURDAY, CALL EMILY (763-229-1067) OR ANDY (651-387-8305)!!!!!!!

Eastview (Sat. Feb. 27):
This is another south of the river tournament, meaning you MUST ride the bus, but you need to get a ride home from Eastview HS in Apple Valley. The bus will leave at 7:10, so be here at 7:05. We are all going to the same place, but there will be two busses. Let's stick to the same bus pattern, anyway though. So novices and discussion on one bus, varsity and extemp on the other.

Roster-- NOT ATTENDING: Dylan Slinger (make sure you get the tubs to someone else...), Lisa Sweere, Taylor Vivant

I'll be back on Thursday, Feb. 25th, so if you have questions, hold them until then. I will be unreachable in Mexico.

Thursday, February 11, 2010

Feb. 20--Sadies

The tournament on Feb. 20 is in Bloomington (not far). You will not be allowed to leave early for Sadies. If you do not show up for the tournament on the 20th, and I find out you were at Sadies that night, I will take very strong action. You signed a tournament contract. You will stick to it. Speech is a commitment. (Yes, I'm posting this because people have asked.)

Impromptu at South

At our home tournament, we offer Impromptu as a fun, extra event for people to try. If you would like to do it, let me know and I'll register you. ALL extemp. speakers will be doing it (because they're used to speaking on a moment's notice). Everyone else, tell me and I'll register you.

See description of Impromptu HERE.

OUR tournament prep

Our tournament is Saturday, Feb. 13th. NEXT WEEK! Every member of the team must help with preparing for the tournament. Sign up for your day and responsibility outside Heinis' room starting next week. The work days will be Thursday and Friday (the 11th and 12th).

See Heinis with questions.

Apple Valley Info

First and foremost, I need to say this many times: there is NO RETURN BUS this Saturday. One of the budget cuts is one-way bussing for Apple Valley, Eastview, and Eagan. I have zero control over this. You MUST ride the bus to the tournament, and get picked up at Apple Valley High School when we're done. Someone could drop a car off for you, perhaps, or you could carpool, but you MAY NOT DRIVE YOURSELVES THERE. You may not leave until after awards.

The busses will leave at 7:00 AM. DON'T BE LATE. CALL IF YOU ARE NOT COMING. Please note which bus you are on. The list is below. Note: the busses are going two different places, so you MUST be on the correct bus. I will take attendance on both busses, and then follow the bus to FRMS in my car. Joy will meet the AVHS group there.

See me with questions. Remember, NO RETURN BUS!!!

Opportunity

On Tuesday, Feb. 2nd, Normandale Community College in Bloomington is hosting a Twin Cities Forensics League College Speech tournament. Rounds are at 3:00, 4:15, and 6:30. This is an excellent opportunity for you to gain more exposure to speaking and perhaps steal topics/pieces (they're college, you're HS!).

Have fun!

Tournament Morning Procedure (For Novices)

Hey new speechers! It was brought to my attention you probably don't know the "protocol" for tournament mornings. You're handbook (which you should re-read before Saturday, by the way) starts with riding the bus. Well, where will that bus be?

The school building is locked on most Saturday mornings, so it is best to wait in your car until the bus has arrived (if you're early). The bus will pick us up in the UPPER PARKING LOT (the teacher lot), because then we have a shorter distance to walk from our cars to the bus (it's gonna be COLD!!!). To recap:
1. Be on time.
2. Wait in car so you don't freeze.
3. UPPER PARKING LOT
4. Call Heinis' cell (952-451-7976) BEFORE 10 PM FRIDAY OR AFTER 5 AM SATURDAY if you are not going to be on the bus.

Disco Topic for 19 Jan

You are a team of NASA administrators who need to present to Congress a strategic roadmap for the future. Because funding is tight and the political will to explore space has weakened, your roadmap has to be compelling. For this presentation, you need to do two things. (1) You need to identify and outline big-picture changes that have taken place relative to space exploration and (2) identify possible partners that NASA could work with to develop further exploration activities.

Extemp Practice Times

Our normal practice schedule is Thurs and Friday at 6PM.

On Monday's I meet with the Disco peeps at 6PM and you are welcome to come to print/read/file during that time, but I don't have anything formally planned for Mondays.

Because of State Debate, we will practice only on Thursday the week of Jan 11.

Disco Practice for 11 January

You are a members of a blue-ribbon commission convened to evaluate NASA's quest to send a manned mission to Mars. Your goal is to answer this question: "Is it worth it?" In other words, are the benefits of a manned trip to Mars worth great enough to justify the costs. When considering costs, you should evaluate not only the overall expenditures for the mission, but how those funds might be better used and the impact this amount of spending would have on other NASA programs. You should directly answer this question and develop a list of justifications for your answer.

Have fun!

MSU Workshop-Jan. 23

To be clear, because the Marshall overnight tournament was cancelled and everyone will be going to EP, the MSU workshop is no longer required for anyone. The MSU workshop is 100% optional, but it would be very helpful, especially for novices, to attend. The workshop is entirely your responsibility as well: you must register, pay, and get yourself there. Registration is due Wednesday, Jan. 13th. Email MSU Asst. Director of Forensics, James Dimock at james.dimock@mnsu.edu to register.

Reminders

1. Several of you still need to get forms in. PLEASE DO SO IMMEDIATELY!!!
2. Don't forget that our first tournament (on Jan. 30) is also solo/ensemble. If you are in band/choir, you need to let me know you won't be at this tournament. Otherwise, you'll be charged the $20 drop fee.
3. Please, please, please don't use my cell phone number unless it's a real emergency. Three times over break people texted or called me without GOOD reason (they have already been spoken to :-)). If you can email me, do. If it can wait, wait. My cell number was given out for tournament day emergencies (ie-sick and not coming, 5 min. late to bus, etc.) ONLY!!! Plus, I do NOT have unlimited texting.
