List of Shame

As of 8:30 AM on Thursday, December 18, 2008, only 11 out of 68 people have all 5 requirements taken care of. Tsk, tsk. To the 11 of you NOT on the lists below, you are my shining stars. I dedicate my vacation to Jamaica to you.

List of Shame:

If you are on the list, it means you do NOT have the requirement taken care of. Being on the list is bad.

Reminder

You must turn all forms in before break! (Eligibility and fee to office; info, contract, and volunteer to me [two yellows and a blue])

There are A LOT of people with missing forms. Get this taken care of, so I can focus on more exciting and fun things than hounding you for forms!

If you ever have questions/concerns about anything speech related, make sure you come talk to me at school. I'm happy to help.

Here we go!

And we're off to a great start! Thank you SO much to all who attended the meeting last night (or to those who came in yesterday to say they couldn't make it, but picked up all the materials). A few things:

1. Go here (linked from my teacher web page) to view an online version of the handbook (if you were to lose your paper copy or something :-)).

2. Go here (MN State High School League speech page) to read ALL THE RULES OF SPEECH AND YOUR CATEGORY SPECIFICALLY. After last year's unfortunate disqualification, there will be no more rule infractions on my watch. You are responsible for reading and know what is and is not allowed. See me or your coach with questions.

3. I have the date of the state tournament wrong in the handbook. It is April 17-18 NOT 24-45. I believe we're on Friday this year, but we'll know for sure closer to that time. State is NOT in the cities this year, so if we qualify, we will need to make a trip out of it. (It is at Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter.)

4. Remember to turn in your form and fee to Mrs. Rogness in the activities office by BREAK!

5. Turn in your info sheet, contract, and parent volunteer form to ME in A109 ASAP!

6. Leave a comment on this page as proof you have read this. (Click on comments.)

Have a super wonderful weekend. Next week we begin! Looking forward to it :-).

Recruitment Contest

Now that auditions are over (and we have 48 new speechers!!!), I can be proud of all of you for doing your part to recruit. The following people were given credit for recruiting on the forms: Abbie, Adam, Ashley, Christian, Dylan, Jeff, Joe, Kelly, Lisa, Logan, Meron, Michelle, Ryan, and Sarah. Good job, guys! The winner, however, is the person who was listed most often on forms. We had a tie for first....thanks SO much to Lisa Sweere and Dylan Slinger! They will each receive a special gift from me at the all-team meeting on December 4th. 5:00 PM. Lecture Hall. BE THERE!!!!

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

MEETING

First all-team meeting: Thursday, Dec. 4th in the lecture hall. BRING YOUR PARENTS. 5 PM.

See me if you can't make it (but you better have a good reason).

Thursday, October 30, 2008

Meeting!

The interest meeting is Thursday, Nov. 13th at 3:00. I'd like as many of you to come as possible, in addition to new recruits. Be prepared to tell all the GREAT things about speech (not the getting up at 5 AM on a Saturday part :-)).

Prize for the first one to tell me about the content of this post! (you can not win twice, by the way :-)).

Monday, October 13, 2008

Auditions

One month (give or take a few days) until speech auditions! Recruit your friends today! A prize for the person who recruits the most!

Also, a prize to the first person to come in and tell me they read this post :-).

Happy MEA break, folks!

Friday, September 26, 2008

Still checking?

I have another small prize for the first person to come in and tell me about this post. Only THREE came in for the last one...yikes! Two months until speech starts, get in the habit!

Something to plan on: MSU is hosting a Winter Warm-up Workshop the week before our first tournament (Sat. Jan. 24th). They will workshop all events all day (9-5). This wouldn't be a speech team requirement (no coaches/judges, no bus), but I will give you lettering points if you attend. I think it will be GREAT to get the season going. The cost is $20 per student which includes lunch. Mankato is only 80 miles and carpooling will be great. I can fit three in my car...

More to come!!!

Welcome back to school!

Enjoy your last weekend of summer. We don't have anything going on for awhile (we're skipping the Fall Festival again this year), but I miss you, so stop in to see me! We have a great new coach, and I'm really excited about him. His name is Mr. Lawrence and he's teaching Tech Writing, Creative Writing, and Eng 10, so you might have him.

Mostly, I'm checking in to see who checks the blog in the off-season. I have a prize for the FIRST person to come see me next week and mentions this post. After the prize-winner, you can have candy, so still stop by :-).

Thanks

Thank you all SO much for an excellent season. Also, the gift certificate and individual cards and trinkets from people were touching. Some of the other coaches and I are going to use our gift certificates together and have dinner next week. We'll probably gush about how great you all are! So, thanks.

We will miss Mike and Kayla A LOT. I hope they know how much we value them. Juniors, you did an excellent job with the tribute. Very touching. Next year's juniors have a lot to live up to.

Speaking of next year, I'm very excited to have Sarah and Kelly leading the team. It was a pretty close contest; all juniors received votes. Which isn't surprising because the juniors this year are super.

Don't forget to see me about speech camp!!!

Good luck in your final weeks of school. Stay tuned to the website for summer communication (sporadic, I'm sure, but you never know...).

Cheers!--Your favorite coach (you know it's true) Mrs. Heinis

Lettering Sheet

Please turn in your lettering sheet to Mrs. Heinis in A109 by next Tuesday (April 29th). If you lost your sheet, write down the tournaments you attended, the days and reasons you missed practice, and what you did to help with the tournament on a piece of paper and turn that in.

Team Practice

Some of your very eager teammates would like to hold an all-team practice on Monday at 3. I think you should make every effort to be there. Discussion will meet as scheduled; Suzanne, Angie, and Joy will all be here. Input from all. And probably a grand ol' time. See you then!

Sections

In case you didn't get the memo from your first hour teacher, here's the sections info again:

Here is all the news that’s fit to print on the situation:

1. You will be dismissed at 12:35 (the end of 4th hour).
2. You may wear your nice clothes to school if you want, but if you would rather wait and change, you will only have 5 minutes to change, as we are leaving at 12:40. If you want, you can leave clothes in my room at the beginning of the day.
3. Registration for the tournament starts at 2:45. Then why are we leaving so early? Lunch! We will be stopping for a sit-down lunch somewhere (probably Applebee’s like last year). So you should bring $$$$.
4. The tournament is three rounds and a final, just like others, but as it doesn’t start until 3, awards aren’t until past 9. So, we will not be home until approximately 10:30 P.M. This is late. You have school on Wednesday. You MUST be in school on Wednesday. No excuses.
5. There are 15 schools in our section, and each school can only bring three in each category. So, at a maximum, there will be 45 people in each event, making this a relatively small tournament. The top three speakers in each category will advance to the state tournament on Saturday, April 19th. (more news to come about that, should the need arise… knock on wood…)
6. There will most likely be concessions for dinner, but you may want to bring something just in case.
7. If parents come to watch you (which I encourage), you may go home with them only with my personal (face-to-face) recognition of that, and you may only leave after awards. You may not leave early. You will have teammates in finals receiving awards. Being there to support them shows team solidarity. We need to have that. You compete individually, but you are a part of a team.
8. Finally, and VERY important, you must have a clean copy of your current script with you. It will be turned in. Anyone without a script will not be able to compete. This includes Creative, Duo, Drama, Humor, Poetry, Prose, Oratory, Great Speeches, and Info. Your script should include your name, grade, and school on the heading. You can give this to me any time before sections and I will keep it safe for you J.
9. I’ll let you know if I think of anything else. Stop by and see me in A109 if you have any questions.
-Your ever-loving coach, Mrs. H.

Captains 2009

It's almost time to vote for captains for next year. We will vote on the bus on the way to sections, so if you're not coming to sections and you want to vote, stop by my room. Below are the candidates (juniors) for captain. They are ALL awesome, but consider the following: commitment, leadership, work ethic, and general merriment. Although doing well (making finals, etc.) is often noted, it is not a criteria you should use for captains. Being a good speaker doesn't necessarily make you a good leader. Captains have the following responsibilities: t-shirts, tournament, banquet, and general role-model-ship. If you do NOT want to be a captain, let me know, and I won't put you on the ballot. Let me know if I forgot anyone, or put someone who isn't a junior on the list.

Kelly Cole
Michelle Heintze
Joe Julik
Christian Keil
Ryan Longley
Sarah Rosenthal
Julie Schmidt
Mikaela Schwartz
Emily Schwegman
Joe Shim

Good luck to all!!!!

St. Cloud Apollo Info

Sad that not many of you signed up for this extra tournament, but here it is.

The bus will leave at 6:30 AM from the upper doors THIS Saturday, March 29th. Andy will be taking you to this added tourney. Remember to practice hard as we approach sections. Drop fees need to be paid!! Don't rack up new ones this weekend. FYI, sections registration is twice as high, so drop fees are considerable for sections, but if you skip sections, you've got bigger issues than the money.

Anyway, here's the roster for this weekend.

1. Kayla Anderson, Prose
2. Abbie Barrett, OO and Prose
3. Michael Berger, Speaking
4. Kelly Cole, Prose
5. Ryan Falk, Humor
6. Michelle Heintze, Disco
7. Christian Keil, Speaking
8. Adam Kunkel, Creative
9. Sarah Rosenthal, Great and Poetry
10. Joe Shim, OO
11. Dylan Slinger, Speaking
12. Meron Zeru, Disco

Have fun!

Sections Roster, Version 1.0

Per our handbook, the sections competitors were subject to the following qualifications:

*Positive attitude (a belief that you can and want to do well)
*Willingness to prepare (a commitment in both time and in favorably reacting to coaching)
*Demonstration of skill (both throughout the season and at practice)
*Demonstration of professionalism (you help build LSHS’s positive image)
*On-task, non-distracting practice habits (how well time is used)

Because we have a small team this year, most of you are going, pending you met [most of] these standards. The tentative roster is below. Tentative because you must also be in good standing financially. A few of you (Michelle, Rachel, Shawn) owe your team drop fees. (Others do as well, including people who have quit, and they're grades will be held later in the year if they're not paid up. So, if you see them, remind them.)

With that in mind, here is the roster for sections:

Northfield and Drop fees

Northfield is NOT using the Joy of Tournaments online registration that other tournaments have, so the registration is due this Friday instead of Monday. That being said, you need to let me know by Thursday if you have a change of schedule for that day. Any change after that will incur cost.

Speaking of costs, the following people owe me drop fees:
Evan
Bronwyn (who quit, but if you see her...)
Shawn
Tim
Shelley (who quit...)
Maurita (who quit...)
Cody (who quit...)

You cost the team time/money/energy when you don't adhere to your contract. Other teams just kick people off the team for not showing up. I'd hate to revert to that. Please make good on your commitments.

Monday, March 03, 2008

Eagan Info

We will leave for the Eagan Invitational at 7:00 A.M. from the upper doors. Please do not be late.

The roster is below. PLEASE let me know sooner rather than later if your schedule has changed and you can no longer make it.

Lakeville North Results

A long day with some fun results:

Michael Berger: 3rd place, Extemp Speaking
Michelle Heintze: Semi-finalist, Discussion

Overall, we took 7th place out of 10 teams. Good job everyone!

Monday, February 25, 2008

North Info

THERE IS NO BUS TO NORTH!!! That would be silly. You need to meet the team in the North cafeteria no later than 7:30 (draws are at 8, rounds at 8:30). Even though you're driving yourself or being picked up, YOU MUST STAY THE ENTIRE TIME (to the end of awards). IF ANYONE SKIPS OUT, YOU'RE OFF THE TEAM. The North tournament has semi-final instead of honor finals. Also, they give away prizes to people who attend final rounds (anyone: spectators and competitors alike). Fun things like gift cards.

If you are on the roster below, you're coming. No more of this dropping at the last minute crap, people. Several of you still owe your team the $15 drop fee. I register you based on the CONTRACT you filled out at the beginning of the year.

We have decided to go to St. Cloud Apollo on March 29th (after spring break). This tournament will count toward your lettering if you choose to come.

IF YOU WANT TO COME, YOU MUST SIGN UP IN MRS. HEINIS' ROOM BEFORE SPRING BREAK!!!! There is a sign-up sheet on the speech cupboard door.

Emily's Speech PARTY!!!

This Saturday (Feb. 23rd) after the Mankato tournament, Emily Schwegman and her family are opening their home to you crazy people :-). There will be food, games, and lots of fun, I'm told :-).

Emily REALLY wants you ALL to come. For those of you who are still "finding your place", this is a great opportunity to socialize with the oh-so-cool people of the speech team.

So, come this Saturday, right after the tourney (well, go home and change into comfy clothes first), to 17853 179th Trail W. (use your standard Mapquest or google maps for directions). Call 952-435-7947 (Schwegman household) if you get lost.

SHIRTS!!!

We need orders for 20 t-shirts and 12 sweatshirts to order them at the offered price. You have until Friday to turn your order forms in. So far, 4 tees and 2 sweats have been ordered. Get these in ASAP, folks!!!

MSU Info

This week we travel to my alma mater for their annual high school tournament (annual but for last year, when it was snowed out). Fear not, it's supposed to be 35 this Saturday, so it shouldn't be too bad.

This tourney is unlike any other we attend, because it is held on a college campus instead of a high school campus. Several buildings will be in use, so wear a coat and your most comfortable dress shoes. Student Union for lunch, not a parent-run concession, so bring some cash.

This tournament charges their own DROP FEE. So, in addition to the $15 you owe your team (cash or check made to LSHS Speech), if you drop, you will also need to give me $5 cash BEFORE Saturday ($10 if you double-enter), so I have money to hand over to them at registration. Below is the registration list. WE WILL LEAVE AT 6:30 A.M. DON'T BE LATE!!!!

Forest Lake: Feb. 16

This isn't the official info yet, but I am registering tomorrow (Friday, Feb. 8) and want to make sure everyone who signed up is coming, because it is a "holiday" weekend. It's our biggest entry yet, and I expected it to be smaller, so I'm a little worried. I HATE reporting drops at a tournament (and I know you don't like giving me $15), so make sure you let me know by tomorrow if you can't be at that tourney.

People who ARE NOT going to Forest Lake: (EVERYONE ELSE is currently ON the roster)
Kelly Cole
Joe Julik

I have Thursday available!!!!! Come see me to sign up. All are welcome, just make sure you sign up and show up.

Lakeville South INFO

This week is our only HOME tournament. There is MUCH to do. Please, if you haven't yet, sign up for a day (Thursday or Friday) to help out. This is a lettering requirement.

Info for competing at our tournament:
This is the first tournament for half of you, so this may be a little repetitive, but make sure you have done two things:
1. PAID and TURNED IN ALL FORMS: If you still have an outstanding status, you will NOT be allowed to compete, and you will owe a $15 drop fee.
2. READ! If you are a novice, make sure you have read "Tournament Procedures" from your handbook, so you have a good idea of what to expect.

Everyone, make sure you are dressed professionally and have everything ready. If you are using a script, make sure it has been mounted on black paper. See me if you need this.

Below is the meet time and roster (no bus, obviously :-)). If you are on this roster, but will not be coming, you owe your team a $15 drop fee. Let me know ASAP if this is the case. If you get sick Saturday morning, you MUST call my cell (in the handbook) to let me know.

MEET IN MY ROOM (A109) at 7:15 (Draws start at 8). We will have breakfast available.

Extemp - Week of Jan 28

The debate season ended about 5:30PM on a cold Saturday night in Mankato...so now it's time to rev up the extemp engine.

We will practice from 5:30 to 7:30PM on Monday and Friday nights up in the IMC. You should probably plan on taking a couple hours a week to print some stuff for the files and read independently as well. We want to use practice time to either give speeches or study topics that you'll speak on.

I know we have our own tournament this weekend, but we'll still do practice on Friday night.

Be sure to offer to help with setting up and cleaning.

If you need to reach me, my cell phone is 651.387.8305 you can either call or text me.

Eden Prairie Results

WOW!!! What an amazing first tournament! Though our showing was not impressive to many standards (15th out of 22 schools), I think we are a very promising small team. Our novii are an incredible group well on their way to owning this team. I am very excited for this season! Although everyone had some impressive moments, here are the highlights of this first tournament:

-Michael Berger, senior captain and generally awesome guy: 2nd place in varsity Extemp. Speaking
-Ryan Falk, freshman rockstar and always smiling: 6th place in novice Humorous
-Joe Julik, junior and luckiest guy at the tournament: winner of the Wii (EP was sponsored by Rasmussen College, who held a drawing for a Wii if you filled out their information card and our very own J.J. won...how cool is that?)

I am VERY looking forward to our "home court advantage" (as quoted by Ryan Falk) next week. Make sure you all sign up to help with tournament prep on either Thursday or Friday. Watch the site later this week for all the details of our very own tourney.

Go Cougars!

Tournament Prep

ALL MEMBERS OF THE TEAM are expected to help with prep for our tournament on either (or both, if you're so inclined :-)) Thursday, January 31 or Friday, February 1. On Thursday, we will be making posters and envelopes from 3-5. On Friday, we will be hanging posters and stuffing envelopes from 3-5. Sign up outside my room (A109) for which day. There are 34 of you, so I put 17 slots on each day, but you can add more if you're willing to come both days. It's generally pretty fun working together and getting pumped for our big day.

CONGRATS to our one-act folks, who WON subsections on Thursday, so sadly won't be at our tourney on Saturday, but will be dazzling the section judges.

Good luck to the 16 competitors who will be starting the season tomorrow at Eden Prairie.

Practice this week and next...

Hello, team!

Practice is a little weird this week and next due to yesterday's cancellations and next week's lack of school. SO, make sure you are communicating with your coaches about when to practice. If you are cancelling practice, please CALL your coach, don't just email, because they may not check email before making the drive over. Please read all notes below in case they pertain to you:
1. Discussion- SO sorry about being sick. Then Suzanne was going to take care of you, but then she couldn't make it either. We will make this practice discussion up THIS Friday right after school. Please let me know if you can't make it, but please make every effort to be here. Next week, we don't have school on Monday or Friday, so we will practice on Wednesday at 3:30. Again, make every effort to be here on this off-the-regular-schedule-day.
2. Angie's Students (drama/duo)- Angie is ONLY available on Mondays, and since we don't have school next Monday, you will all need to sign up for a time to practice with me. Times go quickly, so please see me soon.
3. Suzanne's Students (OO, Info, GS)- If you were supposed to be here yesterday, Suzanne will contact you to arrange a new time. She will be here Thursday for sure, so stop by then if you're unsure.
4. Joy and Amanda's Students (prose, ext. rdg, humor)- Always keep in contact. Their schedules should remain the same, but just make sure you're communicating.

EVERYONE: If you want extra practice time, please come see me, and I will schedule you. This does NOT take the place of meeting with your regular coach unless prearranged. I have time open on Thursday and Friday.

The first tournament is less than 2 weeks away. Only 16 of you are signed up, but all should be working hard. See me with ANY questions about ANYTHING. Go Cougars!

Updates

Some reminders as we head into the competition part of the season:

1. Some of you STILL have missing forms/obligations. You MUST get these taken care of. No excuses.
2. You must be practicing weekly. More if you are double-entered. You need to communicate with your coaches to ensure they know if you can't make it.
3. The first tournament is Jan. 26, which a lot of people can't come to due to solo/ensemble, which is fine. However, the second tournament is our home tournament on Feb. 2nd. Even if you are not able to compete that day (one-act folks), you still must plan on being here after school on either Thursday, January 31st or Friday, February 1st to help with tournament prep. It is required for lettering.
4. Your captains are working on designing t-shirts and sweatshirts. If you have ideas for either, talk to Kayla (mingochica@frontiernet.net) or Mike (mike.berger@gmail.com). T-shirts will be $10 and sweatshirts will be about $60. Start thinking about ordering, and watch the site for info.

Finally, I am SO impressed with what I've been seeing from you in practice in the last month. Some of you are literally dazzling me with your talent. I'm SO excited for the competition to get underway.

Cheers, Mrs. H.
